Hillsdale, the town where the Inn at Green River is located, has a charming holiday tree lighting ceremony in early December.

It is one reason I love living in a small town. Neighbors gather together to enjoy a community event. Here the carolers sing on the balcony of the Hillsdale General Store in the middle of the hamlet. This year’s event had lots for small children to enjoy, such as the fire trucks which arrived all decorated with Christmas lights, which then led a parade of tractors and hay wagons filled with children back to the firehouse for an audience with Santa who gave out gifts.

Of course it is the season for gift giving, and the shops at the Hillsdale General Store (don’t forget the antique and linen shops on the second floor) and Passiflora offer a wide variety of enticing gifts. Forget shopping at the mall. These small town shops, whose owners do the buying, offer much more interesting items for sale.

And you can warm yourself by the wood stove while you are shopping. Can’t do that at the mall!
