The Inn at Green River is located in Columbia County in the northern part of the Hudson River Valley and close to the Berkshires in Massachusetts, America's premier cultural resort. The Inn is an excellent starting point for a wide variety of activities and events, or you may simply choose to spend your day relaxing in the hammock on the beautiful grounds, listening to the birds. In summer, the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood is just twenty minutes away. The Inn is also convenient to three Shaker museums, the Berkshire and Norman Rockwell Museums, Clark Art Institute, MASSMoCA, Shakespeare & Co., the Berkshire Choral Festival and Jacob's Pillow. Six summer stock theaters are nearby and historic museum houses abound in Columbia and Berkshire counties, including Olana, Clermont, the Martin Van Buren home, the Mission House, Edith Wharton's The Mount and Naumkeag. Outdoor lovers may start the day with a leisurely walk down a quiet dirt road known to the locals as "the Dugway" then progress to a hike at Bashbish Falls in Taconic State Park, the Appalachian Trail or Bartholomew's Cobble, climb Monument Mountain or Mt. Greylock. Fishing, golfing, swimming and boating are close by. The adventurous may try a kayak on the Housatonic or Hudson Rivers; our Green River with its native brown trout is more suited to fly fishing and wading. Even after the busy summer months, there are plenty of cultural options including the Berkshire Bach Society, the Berkshire International Film Festival, the Chatham Film Festival, the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, the Colonial Theater and Close Encounters with Music. Antique shops, auction houses and galleries abound in the area and are open year round. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing right to the back door, while "downhill" is minutes away at Catamount or Butternut Basin. And great shops and fabulous restaurants are always beckoning. Among our favorites in Berkshire County, Massachusetts: John Andrews and the Old Mill in South Egremont; Stage Coach Tavern in Sheffield; Bizen, Pearls, Baba Louie's and Bizalion in Great Barrington; Rouge in West Stockbridge; and Spice Restaurant and Brix Wine Bar in Pittsfield. In Columbia County, New York, we recommend the Swiss Hutte in Hillsdale; the Blue Plate in Chatham; Mexican Radio, Swoon Kitchen Bar, Vico, Ca' Mea, DaBa, Baba Louie's and the Red Dot in Hudson; Local 111 in Philmont. All of these fine restaurants strive to work with local farmers and purveyors to offer fresh, often organic, greens, fruits, vegetables and meats. Many are members of two organizations whose mission it is to support networking between local agricultural producers and culinary businesses - Berkshire Grown and Columbia County Bounty. The Inn is also a member!
