Pierced Lampshade Workshop with Marti Tetler

Workshop enrollment is limited — please call the Inn at 518-325-7248 for availability, reservations and further details.

Innkeeper Deborah Bowen has always been a fan of cut-and-pierced paper lampshades, a historic craft that one rarely sees these days.

In 1856, Godey's Ladies' Magazine offered, "This simple and beautiful decoration . . . is universally admired for its fine effect . . . . The prettiest thing of its kind we have seen, simple and inexpensive, yet wonderfully effective and beautiful."

Join Deborah in a 2-day workshop, creating your own pierced paper lampshade, taught by Marti Tetler. Marti began making lampshades in 1976, and opened her own studio within a year. She has studied Early American Decoration and Theorem Painting, and is a Guild member and officer of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. She is the author of Marti's Lampshade Book, your guide to making your own shades.

The workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for two days and is held at the nearby historic 1700's tannery on the grounds of the Austerlitz Historical Society. This two-day, $235 per person package includes two nights at the Inn, breakfast and lunch both days and the materials for making one lampshade. Participants who wish to make additional lampshades can purchase the materials at the workshop for between $5 and $10. Marti will be staying at the inn and will be happy to work with students in the evenings as well.
